Student Safety - Arrival/Dismissal

Arrival/Dismissal
As we enter the coldest and snowiest months of the year, I wanted to remind all EMS families with car riders that the best practice for arrival and dismissal is for students to be dropped off and picked up using the curb at Doors 6 and 7. Thank you for prioritizing ALL students in driving safely while on school grounds!

Report Cards
After School on Wednesday, January 7th
Students will bring their report cards and ILEARN Checkpoint 2 reports home from school. We encourage you to review these grades and data with your student in order to assist them with setting goals for the third grading period.

High Honor Roll and Honor Roll
Students earning High Honor Roll (All A's) or Honor Roll (All A's and B's) will receive a coupon to the Texas Roadhouse in Marion. Ivanhoe's will also recognize students who bring in their High Honor Roll or Honor Roll report card with a free scoop of ice cream! We are grateful for Ivanhoe's and Texas Roadhouse showing their support for our EMS students!

A few other important reminders:
  • Athletic eligibility and academic probation (defined as failing 2 or more classes) for the 3rd nine weeks are determined from Quarter 2 grades (Q2).
  • Students who receive a below or approaching proficiency score on Checkpoint 2 will have an opportunity later this month to retest in order to earn their checkpoint badge. Please reach out to your student's math and/or language arts teacher for specific questions related to checkpoint assessments.

EMS 2026 Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee
For the second year in a row, we are excited to provide students the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition. Students in each grade will have the opportunity to qualify within their grade level language arts classroom. Students interested in participating should communicate with their language arts teacher upon returning from Christmas Break.

  • Five students from each grade level will be selected by Friday, January 9th.
  • Alternates will also be selected in case of any last minute changes or absences.
  • You should reach out to your student's language arts teacher with any questions related to qualifying for the Eastbrook Middle School Spelling Bee.

Our Eastbrook Middle School Spelling Bee will be held on Friday, January 23rd at 9:30 a.m. Students participating will be permitted to have family members attend pending having an approved background check for the 2025-2026 school year on file. Find the link at the bottom of this prompt to complete a limited background check.

The Eastbrook Middle School Spelling Bee Champion will have the opportunity to travel to the regional spelling bee at Ball State University on March 7th. The winner of the regional competition qualifies for the National Spelling Bee, held on May 26-28 in Washington D.C.

Teachers will provide students a list of the words they will need to know for the upcoming spelling bee.

If your student is looking for additional resources, they can be found at the link provided below:

Checkpoint Badges

For the first three quarters, students take a checkpoint assessment each quarter in language arts and mathematics to determine their level of preparedness for the end-of-year summative ILEARN assessments in language arts and mathematics. Each checkpoint assessment measures different topics and standards. We know these assessments can be tedious and lack meaning for middle school students, so we choose to recognize students for their efforts in four different ways (see image). For checkpoint 1, we recognized a total of 390 students! We encourage you to communicate with your student's language arts or math teacher if you have any questions pertaining to your student's data.

Panther Passes for Semester 2

When students return to school next week, they will receive a new set of Panther Passes to tape onto the front cover of their student planner. These 20 passes can be used for student emergencies that require a student to step out of the classroom during class throughout the semester, with teacher permission. Students are responsible for their planner, which includes their Panther Passes, and for tracking how many passes they have used weekly in their homeroom folder. Students needing to use a Panther Pass without any left may be subject to a referral for being unprepared for class, as we believe 20 passes allows students plenty of opportunity to tend to any needs that may arise during their day.

We appreciate your support as we believe Panther Passes increase responsibility and time management skills in our middle school students and reduce unnecessary disruptions to the learning environment.

Golden Drywall Knife Winners
Ms. Zent's homeroom worked on their drywall finishing skills this month, and we broke our own rules of having only two winners by having three winners for the smoothest finish! We couldn't decide, so we awarded Raegan Strader, Laura Compson, and Zeke Stuber as the winners of the "Golden Drywall Knife" this month. Nice work!
